  1. My son had the same sort of poetry assignment, but I think the teacher encouraged the kids, rather than requiring, to choose longer poems by offering grades for them. A C for any perfectly memorized poem, a B for a perfectly memorized poem of thus and such length and an A for a perfectly memorized longer poem. My son decided on the Cremation of Sam McGee (~73 lines). Honestly, I didn’t think he could do it, but, like your son, he practiced and memorized and practiced. I took off work to go see the presentation and he was perfect. He didn’t forget anything, though he did rush through some lines. It was so awesome, because nobody thought he could do it. The teachers who knew he struggled with certain things were stunned. The other kids, like the kids in your son’s class also didn’t take it as seriously. Like your son, my son was disappointed in them and surprised at them. It made him look at them in a different way…. a kind of “if I could do it, why couldn’t you?” sort of way. He didn’t think he was worse than them after that.

    Really good show and I definitely have to check out that mapping book. I haven’t finished Syllabus yet, though! Thanks for the tip!

    1. Thanks for sharing this story about your son, too, having a recitation assignment. Very cool, and I am glad it worked out so well there, too. It is pretty wonderful to hear our kids practicing and reciting poetry, on many levels, I think!
