Episode 281: Not Lazy
Above: random Sunday morning coffee. It’s a messy space despite this show’s emphasis on simplification and a preference for low mess art. (Fabric breaks all the rules.)

Episode 281 of the CMP, a Creativity Matters Podcast

In this episode of the CMP, the art we do and the stories we tell… our personal narratives that we string together to explain what we do, what we are interested in, and how we spend our creative time. “Lazy” is one way to explain away my interest in (realistic) drawing rather than multimedia. I love to look at and talk about multimedia examples (like the artist journal page books in Episode 278), but I don’t want to “do” that kind of art. Is it lazy? Partly. But in this show, I unpeel that… there’s a lot more going on… passion, meaning, mindfulness, streamlining and simplification… What stories do you tell yourself about your art and creativity and why? Plus, a look at a great book on creativity with 15 projects, Release Your Creativity: Discover Your Inner Artist with 15 Simple Painting Projects. Definitely check your library to see if you can look through this in person.

The Flow of Episode 281 (and relevant links):

  • A red flower seen through a bunch of purple flowers
  • Journaling a la Lynda Barry’s format shown in Syllabus (I refer to her “daily diary” format as a “quadrant diary”)
  • The stories we see in photos; discussing a “next” painting with a 16-year-old… and loving the moment of story… the ability to see and construct story and meaning from a picture of a space
  • Life is not linear; life is layered
  • The universe had nothing to say on Thursday night
  • Ways in which my preference for drawing — rather than multimedia — is tied to a narrative of “lazy”
  • But that’s not all… there are many reasons for doing one vs the other. Ultimately, do what you love (and love what you do).
  • Episode 278 – with discussion of two books full of art journal pages — awesome books!
  • Release Your Creativity: Discover Your Inner Artist with 15 Simple Painting Projects (Rebecca Schweiger) [I hope I said this title correctly; the library sticker is over the first word, and I may have said something else….] — Be sure and look at the lollipop flowers project, the one in the chapter on meditation, and the Who Are You project.

Links are provided for convenience to help you find/see/explore the books, tools, and resources I talk about. Using the library, when possible, is always my first recommendation.
